Rosneft’s Samara Group oil refineries were among the winners of the 20th Russian environmental competition «Leader of Russia’s Environmental Protection Activities». The Kuibyshev, Syzran and Novokuibyshevsk refineries once again confirmed the high efficiency of the environmental technologies and projects implemented.
Among the most important areas of environment-oriented activities noted by the competition jury were measures to improve occupational safety and health, conservation and restoration of natural resources, and initiatives to ensure a favourable environmental situation in the region.
The Kuibyshev Refinery won in the category «Best environmentally responsible town-forming enterprise». The refinery is implementing an investment programme to modernise its production facilities and environmental parameters are monitored by a modern monitoring complex, including a testing laboratory, three fixed environmental stations and a mobile station. In recent years, the Kuibyshev refinery has significantly reduced its impact on atmospheric air and has also reduced its use of water from external sources by 20%. At the same time, the share of recycled water in the enterprise’s water supply reached 91.5%.
The Novokuibyshevsk refinery received the same nomination for its active environmental activities. The enterprise conducts its production activities in accordance with the international standard ISO 14001:2015 «Environmental Management System». The refinery has significantly reduced its environmental impact through the implementation of a comprehensive environmental programme and a major production upgrade. Since the beginning of 2024, the Novokuibyshevsk refinery has reduced water consumption by 10.6% and increased water recycling to 96%.
The Syzran Refinery received the highest award of the contest in the Best Environmental Policy in the Oil Refining Industry category. The enterprise carries out several activities: reducing the impact on atmospheric air, improving the quality of wastewater treatment, and reducing the generation of production and consumption waste. Environmental monitoring data confirms that the impact on the natural environment is minimised. Air testing is carried out by a certified factory laboratory and automated fixed stations. A multi-purpose mobile environmental station is used to monitor water and soil at the Syzran Refinery. The sanitary laboratory of the Syzran refinery has successfully passed the procedure to confirm compliance with the national standard GOST ISO/IEC 17025-2019 and meets the requirements of the ISO 9001 quality management system. Its specialists carry out an average of more than 335,000 analyses a year, monitoring the atmosphere around the clock and testing groundwater and surface water samples daily. One of the most important environmental projects at the plant is the construction of membrane facilities in the wastewater treatment plant.
Employees of Rosneft’s Samara Group enterprises actively participate in federal and regional environmental campaigns and regularly plant greenery in socially important places in Samara, Novokuibyshevsk and Syzran. Environmental volunteers from the enterprises carry out educational work among the region’s younger generation: environmental culture lessons and ecological festivals are held in schools.
Rosneft’s Samara refineries are also implementing initiatives to replenish the region’s bio-resources. In 2024, more than 350 thousand fish fry, including valuable sterlets, were released into the Volga waters. On the initiative and with the support of oil companies, a project is being implemented to protect and conserve the largest and rarest bird of the Volga region, the white-tailed eagle, in the Samarskaya Luka National Park. The white-tailed eagle is listed in the Red Book of Russia and the International Red Book.
Environment protection is an integral part of Rosneft Oil Company’s corporate culture and one of the key principles of its business. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimising the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production.
