Scientists from the Siberian Federal University, supported by Vostsibneftegaz (a Rosneft subsidiary), have compiled an up-to-date list of rare animal species in Evenkia, including two mammals and 40 birds. Among them are the black stork, the lesser white-fronted goose, the taiga bean goose, the golden eagle, the eagle owl, the reindeer, the snow sheep and others.
The data from these studies are unique — the territory of Evenkia is home to more than 30% of the species listed in the Red List of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, for which annual monitoring is not provided.
This year, for the first time, scientists used GPS collars to track the migrations of tundra swan and bean goose. The migratory routes of these birds are similar, both species are considered migratory in Evenkia and are not permanent residents of the area. Flock numbers are stable, indicating that the ecology of the region remains favourable.
The experts also identified a list of rare species habitats that should be given special protection status. The recommended sites will be able to play a key role in the conservation of rare waterbirds in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. These protections are important not only for the region’s biodiversity, but for the entire global ecosystem.
The scientists also analysed long-term data and conducted a survey of hunters, state hunting inspectors and tourists. Local residents also took an active part in the study, independently conducting surveys based on the Institute’s recommendations. Biologists studied the status of the species, produced distribution maps of the area and processed photographs.

The East Siberian Oil and Gas Company, a subsidiary of Rosneft Oil Company, develops the Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye oil and condensate field in the Evenki district of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
This year, the Company’s grant programme celebrated its tenth anniversary. During this time, the enterprise has supported more than 29 scientific projects, including projects to study the population of wild reindeer, a bioindicator species of the Arctic zone, Siberian sable, wolf, Altai wapiti, Siberian musk deer; to preserve the Evenki language, studying the biotechnology for artificial reproduction of Siberian taimen, R&D substantiation of bread production from Jerusalem artichoke flour for northerners, etc. In addition, the Red List of Evenkia was published, which includes 45 rare and small animal species of the region. The book is intended for both environmental specialists, ecologists, biologists, and teachers, schoolchildren and students.
