Rosneft supported the renovation of the walk-in enclosure for a polar bear named Vilyui in the Yekaterinburg Zoo. The young male bear was transported to the Urals from the Ortho-Doidu Zoo (Yakutia), where he was born a year ago. The bear’s name – Vilyui – was chosen by public vote in the Company’s Telegram channel. The bear was named after one of the rivers in Yakutia.
Three pools in the polar bear enclosures were overhauled with the support of Rosneft in preparation for the bear cub’s arrival. Water quality and temperature are monitored by special devices, in winter time water is heated. In addition, dens and technical rooms were renovated, live fish storage equipment and two ice makers were installed.
Vilyui is currently under quarantine to adapt to its new location. Zoo visitors will be able to see the bear in a month’s time. It is planned that in the future he will be matched with a polar bear named Khatanga, who has been living in the Yekaterinburg Zoo since 2022.
Since 2013, all polar bears in Russian zoos have been under Rosneft’s treatment — today there are 34 of them. The company provides animal housing, feeding, veterinary support, and finances the renovation of cages. The Company has also developed special toys to enhance the physical activity of the animals. Rosneft is also implementing a programme to rescue and rehabilitate young polar bears left in the wild without maternal care.
