Rosneft Reaffirms Innovation Leadership Among Russia’s Largest Companies

24 September 2026

Rosneft has received the highest scientific and technological development rating from the AK&M rating agency. As part of the study, 300 of the country's largest enterprises were evaluated against criteria such as R&D investment volume, patent activity, the existence of in-house research divisions, and partnerships with scientific organisations. This top-tier ranking underscores the efficiency of the Company’s efforts to strengthen Russia’s technological sovereignty.

Rosneft’s innovation activities are aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, securing the technological independence of the industry,  minimising environmental impact, and improving industrial safety standards.

The Company actively operates a mechanism for supporting employee rationalisation proposals: nearly 1,000 employee initiatives have been implemented, generating an economic effect of over RUB 1.5 billion. Overall, operational efficiency improvement measures yielded an effect of more than RUB 19 billion. The Company proactively protects its intellectual property: 77 new patents for inventions were granted over the past year, bringing its total IP portfolio to 1,178 items.

Digital and technological transformation represents a critical pillar of Rosneft's operational activities. The expected financial effect from the application of digital technologies in 2026 is projected at RUB 100 billion.

The Company’s strategy rests on three core pillars: deploying unified platform solutions, standardising IT systems, and integrating artificial intelligence into business processes.

To design and manage industrial facilities, Rosneft is actively developing digital twin technologies. Utilizing the Company's proprietary technologies, data collection and monitoring are already ensured for over 85% of all operational parameters—ranging from drilling rig performance and well stock operation to refiner units and electricity meters. This aligns with global best practices.

For instance, specialists at the Tomsk research institute created a detailed 3D model of Russia's largest oil pumping station, which features a throughput capacity of 99 million tonnes of oil per year. This digital twin incorporates over 5 million elements and contains data on structures, equipment, materials, and construction stages. The model enables pre-emptive verification of engineering designs, construction optimisation, and enhanced operational safety.

Meanwhile, specialists at Rosneft’s Ufa research institute achieved a major breakthrough by developing and patenting the first Russian robotic system for tubing pipe repair. This fully automated system leverages cutting-edge process monitoring and control technologies. The main advantage of this development is the minimal human involvement required. Consequently, the proportion of manual operations will decrease by 53 per cent whilst productivity will increase by 25 per cent.

Among Rosneft's scientific achievements, AK&M also highlighted a new equipment corrosion control method developed by experts at the corporate research institute in Izhevsk. This new technology enables early identification of equipment degradation risks, yielding savings of approximately RUB 1.4 million per well over a five-year period.

Rosneft is the first Russian oil company to have created and successfully developed a software suite covering all key oil and gas production processes. The Company's portfolio includes 27 high-tech software products. Corporate software is superior to imported analogues in terms of speed, list of tasks to be solved, application of modern algorithms and clear interface.

Rosneft extensively uses artificial intelligence to enhance operational efficiency. The Echo Tools software package is the first domestic solution that utilizes artificial intelligence to measure fluid levels and acoustic velocity in the annular space of a well. These indicators are used by oil workers to calculate bottomhole pressure and select the optimal operating mode for the well, with a view to achieving maximum productivity.

Rosneft leads the market in the development and production of proprietary oil refining catalysts in Russia, fully supplying its refiners with domestic products and replacing imported equivalents.  In 2025, the Company’s scientists expanded their catalyst line with new developments for oil processing and engineering solutions in polymer synthesis. Now, leveraging its proprietary technology and catalytic systems, ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene—a material boasting exceptional physical and mechanical properties required across numerous industrial sectors—can be produced internally.

As the authors of the new rating emphasize, Rosneft pays special attention to environmental protection research and biodiversity preservation. The Company executes the largest scientific program in the Arctic region,  having gathered a unique body of data on the region's climate, geology, and biology.

In order to develop the potential of future industry professionals, Rosneft organises a large-scale IT Marathon on an annual basis. Seven competitions were scheduled for 2025, including information modelling contests, the Additive Technologies and Reverse Engineering Cup, the Student Hackathon, the Academic Tournament, and the Geonavigation League. Over 900 participants from 71 cities, 80 companies and 92 universities took part in the intellectual competition.
