Tyumenneftegaz (part of Rosneft's oil production complex) has awarded a grant to develop educational materials for learning the Tundra Nenets language. The objective of this initiative is to preserve the cultural heritage, traditions and unique language of one of the indigenous peoples of the North.
The research and development of teaching materials will be carried out by specialists from the Department for the Affairs of the Indigenous Peoples of the Yamal North, in collaboration with the Association of Teachers of the Native Languages and Literatures of the Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of Russia.
As part of the project, the Argish of Knowledge educational game set will be designed for pre-school and school-age children. For the nomads of the North, the argish is not merely a traditional means of transport – a caravan of reindeer-drawn sledges – but the foundation of life and survival in the tundra.
The set's play-based format has been selected as the primary method for children to learn the vocabulary of the Tundra Nenets. The Argish of Knowledge will consist of cards covering key concepts relating to the daily life, way of life and natural environment of the inhabitants of the Yamal North. This approach will enable children to learn the names of objects and characters, as well as fostering the development of authentic pronunciation skills, which are crucial for preserving the language. The materials will also comprise an educational brochure, which will include the alphabet, a concise history of the people, and an explanation of their traditions.
Following approval by the relevant authorities, the material will be used in extracurricular programmes at national boarding schools in Yamal.
The project is being implemented during the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia. Rosneft is consistently implementing projects that enhance the quality of life in the tundra. These projects encompass educational programmes, medical care and the conservation of the indigenous environment. The Company is committed to enhancing the quality of life for indigenous communities in the North who reside in the regions where the Company operates.
