Specialists at Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz (a joint venture between Rosneft and Gazprom Neft) have become the first in Russia to develop a diagnostic methodology and innovative equipment for polymer-reinforced pipelines. This technology enables the entire length of the pipeline to be examined without stopping work. It identifies possible defects and draws up a maintenance action plan.
Previously, diagnostics involved cutting out sections of the pipeline. The disadvantage of this method is that it requires the pipeline to be shut down. The in-line diagnostics method developed by enterprise specialists ensures the continuity of the production process. It identifies local particularities of the pipeline and provides forecast data on the condition of the reinforcing layer and external insulation.
At the heart of the diagnostic equipment set lies a unique flaw detector that assesses the condition of the pipeline using ultrasonic waves. These waves penetrate the pipeline, generating a mechanical impulse that reflects the faults and sends signals to the computer. The coordinates, depth and size of defective areas are determined by interpreting the received signals. Further pipeline maintenance activities are then planned based on the obtained data.
Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz is one of the sites in Russia where polymer-reinforced pipeline technologies are developed and used efficiently in oil and gas field development. Compared to steel pipelines, the main advantages of polymer-reinforced pipelines are their mobility and quick installation. This enables new projects in the oil and gas industry to be implemented at an accelerated pace.
A set of the new equipment has already been successfully tested at the Kuyumbinskoye field’s production facilities. Experts expect the new method to improve the safety level of the pipeline fleet and reduce environmental risks.
Accident-free operation of production facilities is one of the priorities of the Rosneft-2030 strategy and a key objective for the Company in all areas of operation. As a leading company in the Russian oil industry, Rosneft plays a significant role in developing pipeline transportation.
For reference:
Slavneft-Krasnoyarskneftegaz, a joint venture between Rosneft (the project operator) and Gazprom Neft, holds licences for the geological study, exploration, and production of four licence blocks, as well as the Podporozhny block, which are located in the Yurubcheno-Tokhomskoye oil-bearing zone in the Evenki Municipal District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory.
