Samotlorneftegaz, one of Rosneft’s key production assets, supported the 10th anniversary of the reindeer herders’ skills competition, the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District—Yugra Governor’s Cup. The competition was dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
Over 1,500 people attended this large-scale event. The competition among reindeer herding families in Ugra is listed in the regional event tourism calendar and constitutes a major celebration of the national culture and sporting traditions of the Khanty and Mansi peoples. The participants competed in five disciplines of the multi-event competition: reindeer harnessing, reindeer sleigh racing, transporting firewood on sleds, throwing a tynzyan (lasso) onto a khorey (pole for herding reindeer), and hunting ski racing. Reindeer herding skills were also judged.
The competition venue recreated the authentic atmosphere of a northern indigenous peoples’ camp, with chums and a festive reindeer sleigh parade. Guests enjoyed an impressive musical and interactive programme featuring folk ensembles. There were also craft workshops, play areas and sports facilities, as well as northern specialities to enjoy.
One of the key areas of Rosneft’s social policy is the preservation of the national culture and traditional way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North. The Company’s enterprises implement numerous social projects in their regions of operation, developing infrastructure in northern villages, supporting reindeer herding families, and improving the material and technical base of educational, social and medical institutions in the ancestral homelands of indigenous minorities.
