RN-Vankor Plants 400,000 Seedlings in Krasnoyarsk Territory

18 November 2024

RN-Vankor (part of Rosneft’s oil and gas production complex) planted around 400,000 pine seedlings in an area spanning 182 hectares during the growing season this year. The afforestation took place in the Kodinsky and Achinsky forestry areas in the Krasnoyarsk Territory.

Seedlings were transported to forestry areas in special containers to protect the future trees from damage and root desiccation. Pine was chosen for reforestation because it is one of the hardiest trees and its root system strengthens the soil. Pine trees grow quickly, creating significant forest areas in a short time. These areas then become habitats for many species of animals and birds, which is important for restoring the natural balance of the taiga.

The preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of Rosneft’s corporate culture. The Company implements large-scale environmental programmes aimed at minimising its environmental impact, improving eco-friendly production processes and preserving and replenishing natural ecosystems.

In addition to reforestation, RN-Vankor’s extensive environmental programme includes the replenishment of aquatic biodiversity. Since the start of operations in the northern part of the region, oil workers have released over 10 million fry of valuable fish species belonging to the sturgeon and salmon families into the region’s Siberian waters.

The enterprise also implements an environmental programme focusing on gas. This programme aims to promote the rational utilisation of associated petroleum gas, which now stands at almost 100% at Vankor. The enterprise is also incorporating circular economy and resource reuse technologies into its production processes.

RN-Vankor’s production facilities monitor environmental conditions, including air quality, water quality, bottom sediments, soil quality and vegetation. Over the past 10 years, the enterprise’s ecologists have carried out approximately 12,000 inspections of this kind.

RN-Vankor runs a grant programme to support scientific research into the flora and fauna of Taymyr, the location of the flagship Vostok Oil project. In cooperation with the Government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, Rosneft has initiated a comprehensive environmental reforestation project in the region. The project is expected to sequester 10 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over its lifespan.

For reference

RN-Vankor LLC, a Rosneft subsidiary, operates the Vankor and Payakhskoye clusters, which together form Vostok Oil — the largest investment project in the modern global oil and gas industry. The project comprises 52 licence areas located in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, accommodating 13 oil and gas fields.
