Educational Guide on Taymyr’s Wild Reindeer Published with Rosneft’s Support

13 March 2025

Thanks to grant support from RN-Vankor, Siberian Federal University scientists have created an educational and methodological guide on the Wild Reindeer of Taymyr. The project aims to develop scientifically sound strategies for the utilisation and conservation of a key bioindicator species of Arctic ecosystems.

The guide systematises extensive data obtained from numerous studies on the wild reindeer’s biology, the role of this unique bioindicator species in the forming and functioning of northern ecosystems, and methods for studying it. The guide will be interesting for scientists, students, and anyone who is interested in the natural world of the Far North. It is available in electronic format, with a printed version also scheduled for release.

The paper is recognised for its innovative approach — the authors proposed their own system for comprehensive ecological monitoring of migratory animals, which includes modern methods of research, data collection and processing. The developed methodological complex can be used to solve a wide range of problems, including preserving migratory deer populations, ensuring the ecological safety of regions, as well as monitoring changes and identifying their factors and causes. On the basis of long-term stationary observations, aerial surveys and the tagging of deer with GPS transmitters, a database has been compiled and software developed for the rapid calculation and analysis of information obtained.

The researchers believe that scientific recommendations form the basis for species conservation measures and for supporting the traditional lifestyle of indigenous peoples of the North. In today’s world, achieving ecological balance and the rational use of natural resources is becoming increasingly important. This new guide is a step towards solving these problems.

Thanks to the support of the enterprise, scientists have been studying wild reindeer for 10 years. During this time, major ground and aerial surveys of the Taymyr-Evenkia animal population were conducted using satellite tags. In zoogeographical terms, scientists note that the Taymyr Peninsula is a unique Arctic territory. It serves as a crucial breeding and summer feeding ground for the Taymyr-Evenkia reindeer population.

For reference:

The results of the competition for grants to support scientific research of applied significance for the Taymyrsky Dolgano-Nenetsky District of the Krasnoyarsk Territory were summed up at the Eco-Arctic Forum, organised by RN-Vankor.

In addition to creating a unique educational guide on the Wild Reindeer of Taymyr, the grant competition winners completed a project studying one of the peninsula’s oldest animal populations, the musk ox. They also assessed the status of the main commercial fish species in Taymyr’s waters.
