Rosneft Supports Reindeer Herders’ Day Celebrations in Taymyr

30 April 2025

RN-Vankor (part of the Rosneft’s oil and gas complex) was the general partner of the main holiday for indigenous peoples in the north: Reindeer Herders’ Day in the Taymyr village of Nosok. The event became a key part of the traditional Eco-Arctic Forum, which is held in the Krasnoyarsk Territory — the location of Vostok Oil Company’s flagship project.

The most spectacular part of the festivities was the reindeer sledding race. A total of over 300 participants competed in the men’s, women’s and youth races to be crowned the fastest musher.

Indigenous people took part in northern-style competitions such as jumping over sleds, pulling a pole and throwing a lariat over a khorei (a harness is thrown over a long pole used to chase reindeer). The Ethno Platform also hosted a national dress contest. Women presented dishes of northern cuisine made from fish and reindeer meat, as well as arts and crafts. All the contest winners received gifts from the oil workers.

The festival concluded with a large-scale concert featuring local creative groups.

The village of Nosok has a population of more than 1,500, almost 90% of whom are nomadic indigenous people. Preservation of the culture and way of life of the indigenous peoples of the North is one of the key areas of Rosneft’s social policy.

Oil companies build housing for indigenous populations, develop infrastructure in northern settlements and support reindeer herding families. They also improve the material and technical bases of educational institutions, social facilities and healthcare institutions in areas inhabited by indigenous peoples of the North.

For reference:

RN-Vankor, Rosneft subsidiary, is the operator of Vostok Oil, the largest oil and gas production project in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory. It comprises 60 licence areas, including fields in the Vankor and Payakh clusters.
