Samotlorneftegaz (part of Rosneft's oil production complex) has completed a large-scale programme to restore 'historical heritage' lands that were damaged during the development of the Samotlorskoye field back in the Soviet era.
The biological productivity of soils has been restored in areas covering more than 2,200 hectares. During the course of the programme, new technologies were developed and unique experiences gained that can be of use to other enterprises.
Samotlorneftegaz performed approximately 85% of all reclamation works using its own ecoservice. To conduct the restoration work, the company has assembled a fleet of over 70 specialist vehicles designed to operate in marshy terrain.
Samotlorneftegaz's environmental services considered the characteristics of the landscape, soil composition, and the hydrological conditions of the water bodies. Experts have developed a base of unique methods and technologies for carrying out a range of reclamation activities in northern latitude conditions.
Samotlorneftegaz was the first in Russia to implement the winter remediation technology. Approximately 70% of the technical work was carried out during a period of sub-zero temperatures and stable snow cover. Phytomeliorative measures aimed at preserving natural plant communities were also implemented during the cold season. Winter seed sowing was applied to 90% of the areas that are inaccessible during the warm season due to waterlogged bogs. Plants grown in the soil and climatic conditions of Western Siberia were selected to produce a sustainable herbaceous stand.
Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture of Rosneft. The Company aims to achieve leadership positions in minimizing the environmental impact and ensuring the eco-friendliness of its production. The company is improving its approach to environment-oriented management, increasing the scale of environmental activities and securing the necessary investments. Rosneft is focused not only on making its business more environmentally friendly and minimising its impact on the environment, but also on achieving a cumulative positive impact on the ecosystem.
