Rosneft and its subsidiaries' employees planted over 10.7 million tree seedlings of various species in 2024, which is almost 30% more year-on-year. The total area of forest plantations is comparable to the area of more than 4500 football pitches.
Over the past four years, the Company's enterprises have planted a total of about 37 million tree seedlings, making a significant contribution to the conservation of nature and biodiversity in the Russian Federation.
21 March marks International Forest Day, which was established by the United Nations General Assembly to draw attention to the sustainable management of these natural resources and their value to our planet.
Preserving the environment for future generations is an integral part of the company's corporate culture and social policy. Rosneft runs a number of extensive environmental programmes and maintains a leading position in minimising its environmental footprint and making its operations environmentally friendly. The Company's approaches to forestry and reforestation are outlined in the public position "Preserving the planet for the benefit of present and future generations: sustainable forest management".
More than 30 subsidiaries planted seedlings in various regions of the country in 2024, including: in the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous District - Yugra, Yamalo-Nenets and Nenets Autonomous Districts, the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Krasnoyarsk and Stavropol Territories, the Tyumen, Saratov, Samara and Sakhalin Regions, as well as in Bashkiria and Moscow. Activities were carried out both within the reforestation works and voluntary actions - "Green Spring", "Forest Planting Day", "Save the Forest" and the International Action "Garden of Memory" dedicated to the memory of those who died in the Great Patriotic War.
The largest contribution to reforestation in 2024 was made by RN-Yuganskneftegaz, RN-Purneftegaz, East Siberian Oil and Gas Company, Bashneft, RN-Vankor and Samotlorneftegaz.
Employees of RN-Yuganskneftegaz, Rosneft's largest oil production asset, planted more than 4.8 million conifer seedlings in the 2024 growing season. This is 41% more than last year's figure. The landscaping area was about 1,300 hectares.
Over the past three years, RN-Purneftegaz has planted more than 1.2 million pine seedlings on an area of 340 hectares in Yamal.
East Siberian Oil and Gas Company completed reforestation works in Achinsk and Karatuzskoye forestries of the Krasnoyarsk region. Oil workers planted 940 thousand seedlings of forest crops on the area of 300 hectares. The forestry territories grew 820 thousand seedlings of Siberian spruce, 70 thousand seedlings of Siberian cedar pine and almost 50 thousand seedlings of common pine.
Bashneft planted 748,000 trees on more than 200 hectares in 2024. It is 45% higher year-on-year. Planting took place in the Republic of Bashkortostan, Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug - Yugra and Nenets Autonomous Okrug. Employees and their families participate in various environmental events, such as Green Spring, Forest Planting Day, Save the Forest; arrange clean-up days and clean the banks of rivers, reservoirs and springs; support the Green Office initiative; and help botanical gardens and zoos.
RN-Vankor planted about 400,000 pine seedlings on an area of 182 hectares in the Krasnoyarsk Territory. Seedlings during the vegetative season were transported to forestries in special containers protecting future trees from damage and root desiccation. Pine is selected for reforestation as one of the forest forming species - these trees are among the most resistant to winds and unfavourable conditions, and their root system strengthens the soil. Pine trees grow quickly and are able to create significant forest areas in a short time, which become habitats for many species of animals and birds, which is significant for restoring the natural balance of the taiga.
Samotlorneftegaz employees planted more than 390 thousand pine seedlings on more than 107 hectares in 2024. Large-scale work to restore coniferous forests was started in 2008. The District's woodland stock has increased by 2 million trees in 17 years, totalling more than 700 hectares.
The group's societies not only carry out tree planting, but also assist in equipping forestry units with modern machinery. For example, in 2024 Samotlorneftegaz transferred domestically produced snowmobiling equipment to the forestries of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous District - Yugra. The self-propelled equipment is adapted to work in harsh climate conditions and will be used for fire patrols, reforestation works, as well as year-round sanitary control of the forest reserves. The financial support of the enterprise helped to improve the material and technical equipment of the base of aviation and ground forest protection, which is engaged in the protection and reproduction of the district's forests.
