A bear cub was born for the first time in the Perm Zoo to a pair of polar bears that are under the care of Rosneft.

Conservation and protection of the polar bear population is one of the main aspects of Rosneft's environmental programme.  Since 2013, Rosneft has been patronizing all polar bears in Russian zoos.

To date, the Company has provided support to 34 polar bears in 16 zoos across the country, including housing, feeding, veterinary care, as well as cage renovation, scientific research and educational programmes. The Company has also developed special toys to enhance the physical activity of the animals.  Rosneft is also implementing a programme to rescue and rehabilitate young polar bears left in the wild without maternal care.

Polar bears Milka and Seriku met at the Perm Zoo 11 years ago. Over time, the predators have become almost inseparable: they eat together, swim and even sleep in the same den. In November, the couple had their first cub.  Experts say it is healthy, active and curious. Visitors will be able to see the bear cub in March when it gains the courage to come out of the den with Milka. At the same time, experts will determine the sex of the little predator and choose a name for it.

The birth of a polar bear in a zoo is a significant event for Russia. The polar bear is listed in the Red Book of the Russian Federation as endangered, as well as in the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and has the status of a rare or endangered species.  The total number of polar bears in Russia is about 4,000 individuals.

Rosneft is committed to environment-oriented campaigns and nature preservation activities.   Geological, oceanological, hydrometeorological and environmental studies are carried out in cooperation with the nation's leading research organisations. In addition, populations of bioindicator animals in the wild - polar bear, wild reindeer, Atlantic walrus and white gull - are being studied.
