Rosneft Continues Research under the Tamura Biodiversity Conservation Programme

22 July 2024

A Rosneft scientific expedition to study the wild reindeer in the western part of Taymyr has left from Norilsk. Scientists from the Siberian Federal University (SFU) will conduct research on population numbers and migrations, including the use of water transport and light aviation - the amphibian seaplane.

The Tamura research programme in the north of Krasnoyarsk Territory for 2024-2027 also includes studies of rare bird species on the Brekhovsky Islands, the Kara subpopulation of polar bears, and fish research in the Yenisei estuary. A number of activities are planned for the current field season, including aerial surveys of the shores of the Yenisei Bay to develop ecological sensitivity maps.

The expedition will cover more than 1,000 kilometres along the Pyasina River and its major tributaries. Specialists will tag the reindeer with satellite transmitters. The data collected during the expedition will help scientists build a complete picture of the current state of the Taymyr ecosystem and the factors that are having the greatest impact on it.

The Company has been studying the wild reindeer population since 2014. Since then, SFU scientists have conducted ground and aerial surveys in Evenkia and Taymyr, and for the first time have tracked the full annual migration cycle of wild reindeer using satellite collars. Seasonal patterns of the animal behavior were revealed; the nature of their movements was studied depending on weather conditions and other environmental factors.

Rosneft is committed to environment-oriented campaigns and biodiversity preservation activities. Arctic Research Centre implements the most ambitious program for studying the Arctic region since Soviet times. Over the past 12 years, more than 50 expeditions have been carried out to study the hydrometeorological, geological and biological features of the region. This has resulted in a unique collection of information on the climate, nature and wildlife of the Arctic.
