Rosneft Develops Green Technology for Recycling Drill Cuttings

25 July 2024

The Company's production assets Samaraneftegaz, Orenburgneft and RN-Krasnodarneftegaz have successfully implemented a waste-free and environmentally friendly technology for recycling drill cuttings.

The unique development of Rosneft's Samara scientists, which has no analogues in the world, makes it possible to produce artificial soil from drill cuttings and works even at low temperatures - down to minus 40°C.

Preservation of the environment for future generations is an integral part of the corporate culture and one of the key business principles of Rosneft. The Company is implementing a number of programmes to minimise environmental impact and improve the environmental performance of its production.

The technology is based on the use of a sorbent-destructor, also developed by the Company's scientists. Sorbent is added to the drill cuttings along with components such as sand, calcium oxide and phosphogypsum. The combined action of the components neutralises harmful substances contained in cuttings. The result is artificial soil.

Artificial soil derived from the drill cuttings recycling process is an environmentally friendly material that can be used in various engineering and economic activities of enterprises.

As part of Rosneft's 2030 strategy, the Company is improving its approach to environment-oriented management, increasing the scale of environmental activities and securing the necessary investments. Rosneft is focused not only on making its business more environmentally friendly and minimising its impact on the environment, but also on achieving a cumulative positive impact on the ecosystem.

Rosneft has previously secured a patent for an invention to recycle drill cuttings at the Vostok Oil project. Technologies for recycling drill cuttings into «man-made soil» and «soil concrete» have been introduced in the fields of the Vankor cluster.
